Of some recommended shows

It seems that a lot of people who have just started, or are interested in starting, to watch Jdramas always approach me, asking, “What shows do you recommend?” When that happens, I usually have to wrack my brain for the thousands of hours I put in watching all these shows since my University days, to sieve out appropriate dramas, according to their preference of genres. Sometimes I look back on my blog and click the “Jdrama” filter, but not all that I love have been reviewed. So I will still turn back to DramaWiki, spend much time looking through and recalling the shows again. :\

So I decided to set up this post to remind myself of all the good shows I have watched (up till I started work in Ubisoft and found little time to watch).

DISCLAIMER: Firstly, I do not claim to watch all Jdramas. Secondly, I, like many people, have preferences in genres. (I love high school rom coms, drama, sports, crime, romance) I don’t watch period dramas. Thus, don’t take my list to be the comprehensive list of GOOD japanese shows to watch. Thirdly there are other good shows I have not watched yet, but I know are good. I will not include them in this list until I verify for myself that it’s good, and into which list they go into.

So basically, this post is for you, who is a “noob” at Japanese Dramas, but want to start somewhere. As an jdrama fan, I don’t want you to start out on a crappy jdrama (yes there are some crappy ones) and then throw out jdrama as a stupid fad of the 90s. But I hope you will enjoy these shows as much as I did, and spread the love of jdramas.

Of some Singaporean pride!

Be proud! The Lead Character animator for the main character (Rio) is local! It only inspires me that There is HOPE.

Well this looks like another great animated feature to catch! Birds are one of the bitches to animate but so far it looks really awesome. Althoughh I must say that the animation of the humans are not.. very… comparable to Pixar’s level, It still looks great. Can’t wait to catch this too :)

Of Bunnies, Candy and Rock n Roll

Hop was nice! In a brainless kind of way! If you liked Alvin and the Chipmunks you’ll like this. Even u didn’t, well, maybe you won’t like the idea of CG Rabbits haha. But I must say this time round they integrated the rabbit quite nicely.

E.B. is really really cute. Furry and fluffy and CUTE. I want a talking rabbit that poops jellybeans.

The music, was AWESOME. They had Dynamite, The Anthem by Good Charlotte and a really awesome remix of I want Candy. Explains the website

My only peeve was that I think the movie theatre didn’t screen it at the right aspect ratio or dimensions! Their ears and their heads kept getting cut off. unless the movie director screwed up really bad, I almost wanted to kick someone at the Cathay. I felt very uncomfortable not being able to see it all, so I don’t care, when the DVD comes out I’m getting it. So that I can see E.B’s cute fluffy yet solid ears being animated.

I want candy!

Of getting Tangled

Tangled, the next Disney film on the Princess series, is a take on Rapunzel. They took liberties to mess up with the original story obviously. But in any case, look! Even though it’s 3d, it’s so PRETTY!!!!! I love the colours of the scenery, esp the forest! It’s just a joyous green! Ahhh I can’t wait for it to open :D:D And Finally! A good looking “Prince” after Prince Eric!!!! Disney can’t get their men right. HAHA.

This one reminds me of the Remy trailer for Ratatouille:

Andddd the directors are CUTE woots! I think Flynn (the hero) is modeled after Byron Howards!

Of Grilled Cheesus

Glee this week is sure to have hit a lot of raw nerves, given the sensitive topic of this episode! They touch on the religious and spirituality and the sensitivity in approaching the subjects as teens in a multi-religious society that is the US. It’s a heavy topic, and something I totally did not expect for this show to do, after all, they thrive on being quirky and being outcasts.

Anyway. Ryan Murphy still stays true to his quirkiness in this by being cheesy about the title in every way possible, no pun intended.

Seriously. Finn coming up with that whole grilled cheesus thing to spoof Jesus, that’s so. Duh. Makes his character even more and more goofy. In a way it’s good. At least he’s not the everyman that you expect. But really. Do you see Jesus?
Finn still can’t sing. Puck can, and he’s hot. I don’t care if he’s a Jew. He’s talented!

I like how they incorporated this whole religion issue to build characters. In a way you can see how all of them approach their beliefs, and in their own way try to reach out to Kurt, whose father was suffering from a heart attack and was comatose. It also serves as an example to us to be sensitive to each others beliefs, and not force them down each others throats. I think we have much to learn from this kids, even if it was a script. And ultimately, it had a nice ending where Kurt’s friends who are mostly Christians and Jews are there for him even when he put them down for believing in something he believes is a fairy tale, but he, who’s atheist, still accepts the help and concerns of his friends, drawing on them for strength. After all, it’s a show to make you feel that friends and family are the one thing that is important in getting through thick and thin.

The whole episode’s done very delicately and the very convincing acting of Chris Colfer really draws me to his character. Makes you believe he’s real.

That said, I think that it was a really theoretical situation, and I think that people can be even more sensitive and less tolerable when it comes to religious discussions in real life. Even Sue Sylvester took a seat on the fence for once. So… I’ll say just take it and go.

The songs were very meaningful and added to the story, much much better than the Britney one. So thumbs up for this one.

Of being a Gleek

Glee is taking the world by storm! And it’s no wonder. The characters are (mostly) lovable, and the songs are great! Somehow the script is also pretty awesome, for American TV. Storyline-wise, it’s decent, but not fantastic. It’s pretty much a high school story line. Kids are awkward, they try to fit in. They find a place they are comfortable. They are happy. They become cool in their own way. Whoopee.

Very feel good show.

Well anyway. I think several of their characters deserve credit for their ingenuity. Namely, Sue Sylvester for her dry wit and antagonistic hatred for the Glee club, Santana for her bitchiness that doesn’t fail to impress me, Brittany for her Stupidly (brilliant) one-liners, and Kurt for his awesome diva-ness. Sad to say, the lead guy in the teens, Finn, doesn’t impress me. Not with his non-existent good looks, nor his fishy singing. Rachel is good though. She can sing really well, and her character is so annoying you can’t help but hate her. What to do, when she’s really that way in real life.

That said, I think the real star of the latest episode “Brittany/Britney” was obviously Brittany. At times I couldn’t even tell if it was the real Britney. Her singing leaves much to be desired, but her dancing is so hot! Plus her deadpan looks to her lines, are just killer. LOVE it.

Rachel did NOT shine in this one. Her rendition of Hit Me Baby One More time, was like when Charlotte Church tried to sing Pop music. She’s not as versatile as she thinks. Surprisingly, she is quite hot. But short. But anyway. Moving on.

I want to see more of Mike Chang in this season. He’s really cute and hot, but he should stop moving around so much. It’s quite distracting. Artie should sing more! He’s got a nice voice.

And they should stop giving Rachel so much air time. AUGH.

Of Mukai Osamu Fangirling

Mukai Osamu
Born 7 feb 1982, one of the cutest guys in the last generations of actors in the ripe age of 22-29. Seriously I think that the actors nowadays, the cuter and manlier ones that escaped the label of effeminate are within this age range. Other guys in this age range that I rave about include Johnny’s Junior’s Ikuta Toma, Arashi’s Matsumoto Jun, Kat-tun’s Akanishi Jin and Kazuya Kamenashi, Mizushima Hiro, Ichihara Hayato, Oguri Shun…

Now to add on and to just fangirl about Mukai.. Oh man he’s just so cute. Totally. Now he’s acting in Hotaru No Hikari Season 2. Previously seen in Nodame Cantabile, Atashinchi no Danshi, and Mei-chan no Shitsuji, he’s the current new love interest of the main female lead. And no wonder! He’s just. *sigh*

Beck the movie, going to be screened in Japan in September. Augh. Visual feast with the Ikemen (Handsome boys)! Mizushima Hiro, Satou Takeru as well.

He’s just got a super cute smile. I have this thing with cute guys with very nice smiles. Really. The eyes are the first thing but the smile just kills me. Looook.
